Why doing a PhD will make you sick forever
The Academic Community hails this to be the highest achievement that an individual can achieve when it comes to Education. More so, the propaganda is that if you have a PhD degree then life will be all the more smooth. But what they won’t tell you is the toll that it takes on the individual’s body while pursuing the Journey.
Of the several other issues a prospective PhD faces, the worse of them being loosing her Health. Yes !, you heard it right. By the time the Thesis is submitted, the Body is already in rags. Imagine spending hours and hours seated in a position without much movement and starring at the problem from dawn to dusk. The spine takes a heavy hit, and followed by the muscles.
Just to tell you the least, the very act of Simply being seated without much movement, induces cellulite, with innumerable skin dimpling and nodularities that would drive any one to hate with disdain and contempt.
You shall live by the Sweat of thy Brows
There is a verse in the Bible which reads as follows, “You shall live by the sweat of thy brow”, now this does not mean you should start farming. It only means that if you got to eat then ensure that you had payed your dues by working out first.
Now, does the aspiring PhD ever aware of this rule for life, specially when she is spending hours and hours together at the lab or before her Computer, typing her literature reviews and writing reports.
Then the penultimate day arrives when the degree is awarded. Lots of joy and happiness, with great delightful thoughts of taking on the world. Then suddenly one fine day, the student now a doctorate wakes up from bed, then there is a sudden swing, as if someone had just pushed her with her heavy crowbar. She tries to get up, the push comes in again.
Then after some recuperation goes to the Clinic to have her blood work done, and there eventuality strikes. Her lackadaisical life style has gifted her with a sedentary sickness called Diabetes Mellitus.
Now to many this might be an everyday syndrome that strikes millions. But what they do not know are the innumerable complications caused by the disease. From eye loss to organ loss, and losses that are beyond the expressiveness of words.
Now one important attribute necessary to accumulate wealth and hold it on is the presence of good health. But when health goes for a tail spin, the very desire to do anything leave alone accumulation of wealth, takes a back seat. When the desire is not there, life loses it spice and charm.
Thus, no matter what the accolades or degrees one receives, Health would be the ultimate deciding factor in deciding the amount of happiness any individual will enjoy. As the saying goes, the greatest wealth is your Health.
